Consul House Jaffa
"Historical building of the consul's house."
In 1847, Queen Victoria appointed the doctor, merchant, and man of the world Assad Yaakov Chait as the first British consul in Jaffa. During the two decades he served in this role, Chait aimed to bridge the gap between East and West and promote cultural symbiosis as well as important trade and agricultural connections. In the consulate, which stood on a hill on Goldsmith Street, official diplomatic events, balls, and banquets for the nobility of the time were frequently held.
